Andrea Leadsom visits LEAP

The Rt Hon Andrea Leadsom MP, Leader of the House of Commons and Victoria Atkins MP, Minister for Women, visited Lambeth Early Action Partnership (LEAP) yesterday (10/1/19) to learn how the National Lottery funded programme is working to better the lives of thousands of children in the local community.

During the visit Ms Leadsom and Ms Atkins spoke with representatives from the Big Lottery Fund, LEAP and the National Children’s Bureau (NCB) to learn how this collaboration is leading ground-breaking work in supporting children and families from conception to four years.

Andrea chairs, and Victoria is part of, the Early Years Family Support cross-ministerial group, which is a cross-government working group, set up to review how to improve the support available to families in the period around childbirth to the age of two.

Rt Hon Andrea Leadsom MP, Leader of the House of Commons said: “It’s great to see local organisations and the wider community coming together to provide a support network for families, particularly those with new babies. I was really pleased to see the innovative work of the A Better Start programme first hand and to meet the committed volunteers and staff who make it happen.”

They also met with families in a 40-minute round table discussion and heard how LEAP interventions have enabled parents to play an active part in deciding on and designing the support they get in order to give their children the best possible start in life.

Laura McFarlane Director of LEAP said: “We were really pleased to welcome Andrea Leadsom and Victoria Atkinson to showcase the ground breaking work taking place here.

“Thanks to National Lottery players LEAP is putting parents in the driving seat, enabling them to shape the support they need to give their children the best possible start in life. They are also helping the project to understand how to design effective early-intervention services – this is important and we hope it will have a wide and lasting impact.”
