Safer Stronger is a group for mothers who are currently or have previously been victims of domestic violence.

About Safer Stronger

Safer Stronger is a drop-in group support service for mothers and mothers-to-be who are or have been in abusive relationships. This service is for those parents who want to:

  • Learn more about building healthy relationships.
  • Explore the signs of abusive behaviours.
  • Be more aware and confident with parenting in a healthy environment.
  • Share their experiences with others.
  • Increase their confidence and self-esteem.
  • Lessen isolation and be part of a support network.

How will Safer Stronger support you?

Women attending the group will be participating in activities that support them to make sense of their experiences and feelings, manage ongoing or future risks and build resilience and confidence in their parenting, which may have been affected by the abuse experienced.

Mothers can gain information of local domestic violence support and gain an understanding of how to stay safe.

How does Safer Stronger work?

The group meets once a week, for 2 hours, during term time and a crèche is provided (usually for children six months plus).

During the session attendees use creative and written activity and share experiences through lively conversations and facilitated discussions.

There is also the option for attendees to achieve AQA certificates when a module has been completed.

What happens when you attend Safer Stronger?

In a calm and free flowing environment, participants are encouraged to discuss and explore some of the common themes of:

  • Abuse,
  • control and unhealthy patterns,
  • difficulties in leaving abusive relationships,
  • support organisations,
  • and the importance of personal inner strength and resilience.

Participants are directed to pursue creative endeavours and build on their own knowledge to gain AQA certificates for units of learning when a module has been completed to add to their portfolio. The group is facilitated by two experienced female facilitators who carefully support the group through a transitional process of personal development.

What are the benefits of attending Safer Stronger?

  • Enhanced understanding of healthy relationships.
  • Increased self-confidence.
  • Enhanced understanding of the impact of domestic abuse/violence on parenting and on children.
  • Enhanced understanding the relational dynamics of domestic abuse.
  • Increased ability to recognise risk.
  • New skills and friendships.

Safer Stronger group facilitators can signpost mothers on to Gaia enhanced 1-1 support if mothers agree this is appropriate.
