Caseload Midwifery

Maternity care from pregnancy to birth and the postnatal period.

What is the service?

A midwifery service that offers continuity of care by a named midwife and a small team throughout pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period.

The team works in close partnership with specialist staff to give women and their partners all the support they need.

We are employed by Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and are regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Families with additional needs or vulnerability may be followed up to 28 days after birth.

What is the purpose of Caseload Midwifery care?

Women receive continuity of care from a small group of midwives for the whole perinatal period, which is considered the gold standard in maternity care.

This continuity helps create closer, more trusting relationships between families and their midwives.

Safety is also enhanced, as there is evidence that caseload midwifery is associated with improved birth outcomes.

What happens in a session?

Women receive all their perinatal care within the team and have a named midwife, a buddy midwife and the wider team including a maternity support worker to accompany them.

The team is on call for births regardless of whether it happens at home, in the birth centre or in the traditional labour ward (within St Thomas’ Hospital).

What are the outcomes you can expect by attending?

You will receive your pregnancy,  labour/birth and postnatal care from your midwife and the team, and will get to know each other well during the journey. You will be offered individualised care and will be well informed about your options for pregnancy, birth, and beyond.

You will have a direct phone line with your midwife and team to ask questions and discuss concerns, but you will also have advice out of hours when in labour or in an emergency. We will visit you and baby as well.

How to take part

Eligible pregnant women are offered Caseload care when arranging their booking appointment.

Due to the on-call nature of our work, we equally offer and request a certain degree of flexibility with appointment planning. We occasionally reschedule or send another midwife from the team to your appointment: this is due to our commitment to be present at your labour and birth whenever possible.
