LEAP NEWS - Making the LEAP for A Better Start!
LEAP’s Project Director Laura McFarlane discusses what happened at LEAP’s official launch event and looks forward to a busy year ahead for the programme.
The Lambeth Early Action Partnership (LEAP) aims to transform the lives of children under four and families living in Lambeth, giving them quite literally A Better Start in life.
After so many meetings and discussions with our partners in Lambeth, it’s been exciting to see LEAP take shape. Just talking about what we are aiming to do doesn’t really do the project justice and so we officially launched LEAP at an event at the Karibu Centre in Brixton in February.
We invited local parents and children, LEAP partners and local voluntary and community organisations and it was a brilliant chance for everyone to come together to learn more about the programme’s progress and future plans.
Among the LEAP partners in attendance were the Community Based Activity and Nutrition Programme (CAN) which supports pregnant women with a BMI of 30 and over to make healthy lifestyle changes during pregnancy, and the Family Nurse Partnership (FNP), a programme for under-20s expecting their first baby. We were also delighted to welcome the Children’s Food Trust, speech and language therapists, play specialists and a whole host of parenting programmes.
But the day would not have been a success without parents and their children and we were pleased to see so many familiar friendly faces and lots of new ones.
We ran a hugely successful workshop with local practitioners to think about how we can create a shared learning environment across the LEAP area and beyond. We had excellent discussions with parents about the Parent Champion scheme which is integral to the LEAP programme, and four of our current Parent Champions spoke about their involvement and how they are using their own experiences to help other local parents.
The coming months look to be just as exciting for LEAP as we continue to plan the delivery of the programme and work with parents and partners to provide key services to support parents and families across the Lambeth community.
